A: Reducing costs and investing wisely in new technology
Maintaining best practices under tight budget constraints and keeping
an eye on the bottom line when buying new technology is an important
consideration for CIOs. This session will examine how to engage both business
partners and clients as sources for innovative ideas and explore how you pursue
new business opportunities outside of your comfort zone, creating value for both
the firm and client, while maintaining overall control of the governance
processes. The session will illustrate how to maximise existing technology
investments and ideas for monitoring and analysing usage, together with
strategies to drive adoption through enhance user training. Delegates will also
benefit from understanding how to evaluate the technology you have today, when
to update it and when to wait, together with tools available for effective
budgeting.
Peter Bauer, CEO, Mimecast
Paul Caris, CIO, Eversheds
Brenton Miller, director of knowledge management, Cleary
Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton
B: Driving productivity through business process management
Improving business processes is central to all firms. How does the
business process work? Debate will centre around how to achieve optimisation and
streamlining your process across multiple jurisdictions to enable increased
efficiency. The session will examine how best to place the control back in the
hands of the business, thus making the process the main focus, with technology
becoming the facilitator. Consideration will also be given on how best to
leverage technology to effectively deal with projects while controlling your
costs and maximising resources.
Tony Cordeiro, chief information officer, White & Case
Michael Mills, management consultant, Kraft Kennedy
C: Mitigating security risk and meeting clients demands on data
security
Security of information and interactions is a huge challenge for law
firms. As well as needing to guarantee data privacy and client confidentiality
against real and sophisticated attacks, law firms must also demonstrate
compliance with strict standards and statutes to
regulators and clients alike. The technological advances in the storage and
management of documents have enabled huge efficiency and client service
improvements for legal firms but also brought increased risk. This session will
explore ways to mitigate the risk of security threats from external hackers and
possibly disgruntled employees or former employees, together with ways to meet
clients demands on law firm data security.
Karen Jacks, head of IT services, Bird & Bird
Andrew Powell, director of IT, Nabarro
D: Maintaining profitability in the face of alternative fee
arrangements
With year-end figures showing a decline in revenue, coupled with a reduction in
costs from clients, firms are busy formulating strategies to increase the bottom
line. With client demands on the increase and firms being squeezed on fees, is
the fixed fee enough to keep clients
happy? This session will address how law firm IT can help maintain and grow
profits in the face of fee pressure and the move away from the billable hour.
Consideration will be given to how you can help improve end-of-year results by
focusing on your mobile technology offering to lawyers to enable real-time
recording and analysis for e-billing.
